Matera and it's setting
Lose yourself in its maze of streets and take a trip into the past. It’s a city built vertically. Most of the streets are stairways and yet more stairways up to eleven floors.
Matera has many rupestrian churches with frescoes from various eras. We recommend you investigate the low-priced bonus tickets on offer for visits to several of the churches. The most important of these are: San Pietro Barisano, Santa Maria de Idris, Santa Lucia delle Malve, Santa Barbara, Madonna delle Virtú and San Nicola dei Greci. Some of these rupestrian churches with frescoes had been inhabited by families with their animals.
Don’t forget to visit the Palombaro, the large water collection cistern. You need to book, as it’s a guided visit.
