La Stalla is a real cave, very wide and very high (almost 6 metres). Taking advantage of this height, a loft has been made for the bed. This loft affords a very special view of the entire cave. The room was an old stable and the authentic feeding trough has been preserved. It also has views over Matera’s Gravina river.
The bathroom is spacious, and the ground-level shower is very large. The furniture is very comfortable and is made from old materials and recovered wood which, using a lot of creativity, have been transformed into benches, lamps, chairs and other objects.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant right next door.
It’s very easy to get to. You need to know that traffic to the Sassi (historical centre) of Matera is restricted to authorised vehicles and the only way to get there is by taxi, bus or on foot. La Stalla is at street level, on the main access road to the Sassi. You can get there by taxi and there’s a bus stop 15 metres away. So you don’t have to lug your cases or go up and down stairs through the maze of cobbled streets to get there. Don’t miss it.
